Canada’s Horse of the Year in 2015

Dan Patch & O’Brien Older Pacing Horse of the Year in 2015

State Treasurer, one of the best open pacers to look through a bridle in recent years, has been retired to stand stud at Seelster Farms of Lucan, Ontario, starting with the 2017 breeding season.

State Treasurer earned $2,072,450 during his illustrious racing career during which he faced the gate 106 times for a top three summary of 33-15-16. Trained throughout his career by Dr. Ian Moore, State Treasurer’s most successful season was in 2015 at age six where he earned just shy of one million dollars in purses and his life mark of 1:47 when he captured the US Pacing Championship at the Meadowlands in a world record.

His other victories during that double O’Brien Award winning season included the Roll With Joe in a track record 1:47.2, the Canadian Pacing Derby, where he tied the fastest three-quarter mile time in WEG history, The Dayton Pacing Derby, the Mohawk Gold Cup and the Molson Pace.

It was the third straight time he’d captured the Molson Pace, Western Fair’s signature race.  Other major stakes to his credit include the Allerage at The Red Mile in 2014. During his three-year-old season he swept Summertime Series at Mohawk, won an elimination of the Confederation Cup and two legs of the Diplomat Series (second by a nose in final).

He faced and defeated many of the sports’ best pacers throughout his career and was victorious over all sizes of racetracks. He is the first foal from Ideal Treasure whose other offspring is State Treasurer’s full brother $189,000 winner Hickory Icon. His dam is a full sister to $602,000 winner Ideal Matters.

State Treasurer will be standing his first season in 2017.

SUNSHINE BEACH

Somebeachsomewhere – Light Up – Artsplace

p, 2, 1:52.1s, 3, 1:47.4f ($977,438)

2017 Fee - $5,000

A spectacular looking son of super-sire Somebeachsomewhere, Sunshine Beach is from the prolific Artsplace mare Light Up, making him the half brother to Warrawee Flare p, 1:50.3s ($609,019), Safe Harbor p, 1:50.1f –’14 ($549,268) and Western Moonlight p, 2, 1:52.3 ($366,091).

As a sophomore, Sunshine Beach captured the $500,000 Battle of Brandywine Stake final at Pocono Downs, ending Captaintreacherous' undefeated three-year-old season, in a world record-equalling time of 1:47.4. Sunshine Beach also paced to victory in the final of the $284,160 Progress Pace at Dover Downs, a division of the Bluegrass Series at The Red Mile, an elimination of the Meadowlands Pace at The Meadowlands and an elimination of the Matron Stake at Dover Downs during his sophomore campaign.

An $85,000 yearling purchase, Sunshine Beach was trained throughout his impressive career by Mark Steacy.

"He was a tough, gutsy horse with a big heart"

.... Trainer Mark Steacy

"Most don't realize that Sunshine Beach raced through an extremely painful bladder stone. Even with this he was a world champion. He narrowly missed winning the Breeders Crown after being parked with no cover from the 8-hole for the whole mile. Two days after winning the Progress Pace he had major surgery to remove the bladder stone. Unfortunately he was still left with a kidney stone which he was forced to race with as a 4yr old." --- Mark Steacy.

Sunshine Beach’s oldest foals are yearlings in 2017.  He possesses exceptional fertility and served a great book of mares in his first two seasons at stud.

Thinking Out Loud - Ponder - Los Angeles4, 1:47.2M ($1,957,217)

2017 Fee - $4,000

In 2012, Thinking Out Loud captured one of the few major stakes races that had eluded his Hall of Fame trainer Bob McIntosh, the $1.5 million North America Cup. “He was worth the wait,” said McIntosh simply after the impressive victory over a field that included such standouts as Sweet Lou, A Rocknroll Dance, Pet Rock, State Treasurer and Warrawee Needy.

Thinking Out Loud was lightly raced as a two-year-old, making just four starts, with three wins and a second to show for, which included a leg and the final of the Dream Maker Series at Mohawk. A bone bruise caused McIntosh to stop his rookie season and his patience paid off in spades. At the conclusion of his sophomore year he had seven wins, five seconds and five thirds for $1.2 million in earnings.

Over the next two years Thinking Out Loud proved conclusively that he could compete with the toughest group in harness racing, the free for all pacers, a group that included the richest pacer in history, Foiled Again. He captured the US Pacing Championship in one of his first races as a four-year-old in 1:47.2, his life mark.

“He’s got a tremendous turn of speed and he can carry it a good distance. It’s not like it’s a little burst of speed. He can carry it a long ways,” praised his regular driver John Campbell.

At five, Thinking Out Loud’s Grand Circuit wins included the Breeders Crown final at the Meadowlands over Sweet Lou, State Treasurer, Modern Legend and Foiled Again. He also captured the American National at Balmoral. He retires with 16 lifetime wins and earnings of $1,957,217.

Thinking Out Loud is a son of one of McIntosh’s former stars, Ponder. “He’s much like his dad; Ponder was one of the greatest horses I ever trained and this horse has the same sort of attitude to him,” McIntosh noted.

His dam, Los Angeles, was a multiple stakes winner and earned $289,000 in her career. She is by Camluck, another of McIntosh’s former stable stars who ruled as the top pacing stallion in Canada for many years. Camluck passed away in 2015 at Seelster Farms where he stood stud his entire career.

Thinking Out Loud is the half brother to stakes winner West Of L A p, 2, 1.53.2 ($230,830), the dam of  L A Delight p, 2, 1.51.2s; 3, 1:49.1f’ 16 ($1,492,233) and Somewhere In L A p, 1:48.4f’ 16 ($839,935).
